gain.

school’s out for the summer, but not quite forever. and the summer, as i’ve found, isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. i mean, what do we really get out of it? warm weather? a job? maybe a couple extra bucks? how about too much spare time? yeah, it’s wonderful to not have a class schedule to keep up with, but if you really think about it, are we better off without one?

i have a friend who can’t do anything, i mean anything, without a schedule; it’s like her life falls to pieces. often i just make fun of her for it, but i so wish i could manage my time like she does. yeah, i get things done, but i’m always in a rush and it’s always down to the wire. if i could manage what time i had i know i could be so much more productive.

i won’t say that time equals money, because unless you’re on MTV’s “Next”, it really doesn’t. but i will say that time equals opportunity. what you do with that opportunity and where you place it is up to you and it will yield what you want, just like planting corn grows you corn. but what of wasted time? it is said that an “idle mind is the devil’s playground”. i’m not saying that every moment of every day needs to be spent doing some kind of work, but just like we gain opportunity when we have more time, we gain susceptibility. too much of either one won’t work.

i’ve been working for a company that does live sound and on my last job i had a 3 hour long conversation about gain structure with the guy that i was helping out. he said that you have to understand how the whole system works and always start from zero in order to keep your system from peaking. interestingly enough, the way to get more sound out of a system is not to increase the gain, but rather to control and limit it through each piece of the system. if all you do is add gain, all you’ll get is a blown speaker.
